We recently wrote a post that looked at things you need to consider if you are thinking of retiring abroad. This included researching the countries, researching the different locations and taking time to learn the language.
We promised you more tips, so we’re back with even more advice on taking the big step into the unknown and retiring abroad – enjoy.
Are You Financially Able To Move?
Money is probably the number one reason for making or breaking a move abroad. As a retired couple or individual, you don’t want to have to work when you move. Therefore, it’s important that you have the finances to cover the cost of living when abroad.
We suggest getting financial help – they can take a close look at your money and see how comfortable you’re going to be.
Familiarise Yourself With The Local Laws
Good research plays such a big part in your decision to move abroad and it isn’t reserved for just checking out the country and location. We think it’s a really good idea to research the local laws of the area in which you are planning on retiring to, so that you can avoid any problems happening in the future. Information like this is incredibly easy to find, you just need to do a bit of looking.
Remember It Isn’t a Holiday
A lot of people view moving abroad as just another holiday, but this is the wrong way to be looking at it. This doesn’t just apply when looking at money (although that is important), it also means emotionally too. Remember that the place you are choosing is going to be your home for the foreseeable future (and hopefully the rest of your life), so you need to know that you’re going to be happy there for the long run.
Staying In Touch With Family
Moving abroad can be an exciting time but it can also be an upsetting time for the family that you are leaving behind. Whilst you are starting a new chapter in your life, your friends and family have to adjust to not having you live nearby.
Fortunately, the internet has now made it extremely easy to stay in contact with people, especially useful for those living in another country. Apps such as Facetime, Skype and Facebook all make it easy to stay in touch with family.
