Make Your First Month Living Abroad a Successful One

Congratulations! You’ve made the decision, your UK home is up for sale, and you’re definitely doing it.

The For Sale sign is up in your garden, and you’re scouring the property market for villas for sale in the Algarve.

If you’re already thinking ahead to the first month of the Big Move – we can help.

We will just say it outright – the first few weeks of living abroad will be good, bad, exciting, frustrating, and overwhelming – sometimes all at once. Yet if you ask anyone who has relocated abroad, they will tell you that it’s the best thing they ever did.

It’s natural to be scared in the beginning but there are things that you can do to overcome this and make your first month both productive and successful. We’ve highlighted some of these important steps.

Meet The Locals

Don’t isolate yourself when you move abroad – go and engage with the locals! We can understand that it’s scary to put yourself out there in an unfamiliar country, especially if you don’t speak the language fluently yet. However, you’ve done the hard part by making the decision and the move – don’t be afraid to go have fun.

The more you interact with the locals and immerse yourself in their culture, the quicker it will start to feel more like home.

Don’t Rush Everything At Once

You’re not on holiday with a limited time to do and see everything. You’re there for the long haul, so take your time and relax. You shouldn’t feel guilty for spending time unpacking all your items or spending time decorating and improving your new property. All the cool and exciting things will still be there in a few weeks or months’ time so don’t feel rushed into doing everything in the first week.

Surround Yourself With Things That Bring You Comfort

When it comes to choosing between getting the internet and buying that coffee table that you need – don’t be afraid to put the internet first. You should invest in things that are going to make you feel more comfortable and if the internet allows you to keep in touch with everyone back at home quicker, there is nothing wrong with prioritising this.

Just remember to take things slow – you have plenty of time to do everything on your list!
